Why do corporations purposefully make the hiring processes so difficult today?

Presumably, if you can't handle the relatively short application process, you'll likely not be able to handle actual employment. This process weeds out the less committed and less dedicated applicants so that the employer is ultimately able to choose from applicants who are dedicated, intelligent, and responsible enough to deserve it.
