Is using a tanning bed safe in this situation?

I was reading the latest issue of 17 magazine and there was an article about a girl who got melanoma at 17, which scared me because I want to use a local tanning salon to start my summer tan. They said that the UV rays that tanning beds give off are the reason you get melanoma, but at the salon that I'm planning on going to they don't use UV rays to get you tan so I was wondering if it would be safe to use because I just want to be sure because I'm very nervous that if I use a tanning bed that I'll get skin cancer.
