What are long term effects of abnormal thyroid?

I am 28 and just found out two days ago that I have an abnormal thyroid. I was at the doctor for a lump in and she just happend to feel my throat and it seemed a little enlarged, so they did a blood test ( we are still waiting on vitamin D and B12 results). I called the dr.s office and spoke to a corpsman ( navy nurse) to get the results but the doctor still has yet to call me back even though I have left two messages. So I am not sure if my thyroid is high or low. I ume high since I have four children under the age of 7 and my weight consistently fluctuates between 112 and 122 pounds. But besides that the only side effect that I have is low drive. I am not one to take medication if I don't have to. So what are the long term effects of a abnormal thyroid? What are the effects of it going untreated. And, is this a sign of future health problems? I have always been pretty healthy, so I have been caught completly of gaurd.
